Louis XIV

Louis inherited the French throne while he was still a child and he did not begin his personal reign until 1661. At that point France was the most powerful nation in Europe. Louis centralised power around himself, building a huge palace at Versailles and extending the boundaries of France by war. In the history of Christianity, he is remembered for his determination that the French Church should be autonomous. To that end, he initially encouraged Bishop bossuet and the Gallican party. In addition, he persecuted the Jansenists and he revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had guaranteed toleration for Protestants. Thus Louis managed to ensure uniformity, to retain Catholicism, but, at the same time, to keep control of the Church within his realm.
